Sworn affidavits and statutory declarations prepared and witnessed by Hugh Phelan, Notary Public and Solicitor, Douglas, Cork. Accepted for Irish and international legal proceedings.
An affidavit is a written sworn statement of fact made voluntarily by a person (the "deponent") before a person authorised to administer oaths, such as a Notary Public. By swearing an affidavit, the deponent confirms the truthfulness of its contents under oath — making a false affidavit a criminal offence (perjury).
Affidavits are used widely in legal proceedings, immigration applications, overseas document processes, estate administration, and many other contexts where a formal sworn statement is required.
A statutory declaration is similar to an affidavit but is a formal statement made without an oath — the declarant "solemnly and sincerely declares" rather than swears. Many overseas jurisdictions and Irish government bodies accept statutory declarations for various purposes.
Describe Your Need
Call or email to explain the purpose of the affidavit. Hugh Phelan will advise on the correct format and any specific requirements for your destination country.
Affidavit Prepared
The affidavit or declaration is drafted in the legally correct form. For simple declarations, this can often be done on the day of your appointment.
Attend Appointment
Bring valid photo ID. Do NOT sign the affidavit beforehand — Hugh must witness you sign and administer the oath in person.
Sworn & Sealed
The oath is administered, you sign the affidavit, and Hugh attaches his notarial certificate and seal. Ready for use immediately (or with apostille if required).
Need an Apostille Too?
If your affidavit will be used in a Hague Convention country, it may also need an apostille. Hugh Phelan can manage the full apostille process — see our Apostille Service page.
