FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Notary Public in Ireland?
A Notary Public in Ireland is a senior lawyer appointed by the Chief Justice to authenticate legal documents for use abroad. They verify signatures, certify copies, administer oaths and prepare notarial acts. Their seal and signature are recognised internationally in 120+ countries.
How much does a Notary Public cost in Cork?
Fees range from €65 to €200 depending on document complexity. Simple document notarisation starts at €65, apostille preparation from €100, powers of attorney from €120, and complex corporate documents from €150. All fees are discussed upfront — no hidden charges.
Do I need an appointment to see Hugh Phelan?
Yes, appointments are strongly recommended to ensure Mr Phelan is available and has reviewed your documents in advance. Call 021-489-7134 or email info@phelansolicitors.com. Same-day and next-day appointments are often available for urgent matters.
What documents do I need to bring?
Bring: (1) Your original document(s) — do NOT sign them beforehand, the notary must witness your signature; (2) Valid photo ID — passport is preferred; (3) Any supporting documents relevant to the notarisation (e.g., company constitution for corporate documents). Contact us in advance if unsure.
What is an apostille and do I need one?
An apostille is an official certificate from Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs confirming that a notary's signature is authentic. You need one if the country receiving your document is a member of the Hague Convention (most countries are). Hugh Phelan will advise if your destination country requires an apostille.
How long does the notarisation process take?
Standard notarisation is usually completed during your appointment (30–60 minutes). If an apostille is also required, allow 3–5 working days for the Department of Foreign Affairs to process. Express apostille service is available for an additional fee.
Is Hugh Phelan registered with the Law Society of Ireland?
Yes. Hugh Phelan is a fully qualified Solicitor registered with the Law Society of Ireland and is also listed on notarypublic.ie, the official directory of notaries in Ireland. He is a member of the Faculty of Notaries Public in Ireland.
Can you notarise documents for use in the USA?
Absolutely. The USA is a Hague Convention country, so Irish notarised documents with an apostille are fully recognised in all US states. Hugh Phelan regularly prepares documents for American real estate transactions, US visa applications, and US company formations.
Where is your office in Cork?
Our office is located in Douglas, Cork — one of the most accessible locations in Cork with excellent transport links. We are easily reached from Cork City Centre (10 minutes), Carrigaline (10 minutes), and Ballincollig (20 minutes). Free parking is available.
